Ebooks and EMagazines from UK Libraries

Recently, I got an opportunity to live in a small village called “Leek” in Staffordshire Council, for few weeks.

It is very small, peaceful, but modern village. Walking around the streets itself will give great peace to the mind.

Library is the first place I like to explore on the places I do. To my wonder, this village has a great library filled with books in all genres, computers for public usage, various activities for toddlers, reading groups, IT training for adults etc.

Spent most of the times with the magazines and rare collections there.

one day, I shouted “Wow” on seeing this poster.

Announcement on Free Digital magazines in Staffordshire Council Library, UK

Announcement on Free Digital magazines in Staffordshire Council Library, UK

hehehe. Not about the girl on the poster.

How can a library lend digital books and magazines?

I asked the staff  and they wanted me to become a member of the library to avail this facility.

“Oh Sure.”  I said, as the membership is free.

Got membership card and PIN number to login to their site.

These are the links that provide great collection of digital books.

E-magazines are only in PDF format. But we can read them with a big tablet. The collections of magazine is great and they are adding more. We get very latest magazines in all genres.

Most of the Ebooks are in epup format and few in PDF. Both the ebooks and emagaines are DRM enabled. We have to use “Aldiko” app for ebooks and “Zino for libraries” for magazines.

The ebooks and emagazines can be lend for 21 days maximum. They disappear after the specific days.

Though I hate DRM, I like these facilities that Staffordshire library is giving for the public. It seems the department of libraries is paying for the publishers. The public get free, latest ebooks to read on their devices.

I explored libraries of NewCastle, Nottingham, Manchester. They have great libraries. but they dont provide ebooks services. Staffordshire libraries are very innovative on this. They provide membership only for people living in UK.

Thinking on when will we get such systems in India? What we have to do to for this?

Is it possible to get free ebooks in India, but authors and publishers are paid by dept of libraries?

Welcome to the Real World – Measure and reduce the smartphone usage

I realised that I am using the smartphone too much. I started to use to kill my leisure time, but now it is killing all my time.

I was using my phone for 33 hours in last 7 days.

I always think that I dont have much time to spend on the items in my to-do list. But from where did I get the 33 hours/week. It is more than one full day. 😦

On my process to reduce the virtual life and to start living in the real world, with books, dance, music, talking with people, clearing my to-do items, writing etc, I measured the usage of the mobile with the app “Quality Time”

Found an alarming statistics.
See below for the details.

I request you to install this and measure the time you spend on virtual world with your smartphone.

It will free you from the high amount of smartphone dependency.

Reduce your internet addiction and live a real life.

Welcome to the Real World.

Setup Little Free Libraries – Community driven libraries – in every street

Do you have books at you home?

Do you donate books to local library?

Do you sell your old books to old book shop?

Do you want to read books for free?

Does your govt library has only very old books?

Here is the concept of “Little Free Library”.

It is the community driven Library. Why should govt or private only run the libraries?

The concept is simple.

It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. You can, too!

see this 2 min video about it – https://vimeo.com/72957294

As any one can take any book or give any book, every time you goto the Little Free Library, you will new set of books to explore.

There are more than 25,000 Little Free Libraries around the globe registered with the site http://littlefreelibrary.org and they are still growing,

Even we can set it in our streets and start sharing a local community of readers.

Please find the locations of the Little Free Libraries in Chennai.  For more details contact the steward listed under the library.  Timings are generally during the daylight hours.

FreeTamilEbooks.com – Let us free the Tamil Ebooks

Ebooks Readers:

There are many handheld devices to read ebooks now. Kindle, Nook, Android Tablets are the big players in this domain. The cost of these devices are getting low as around 4000-6000 INR. Many people are buying these devices now.

Ebooks in English:

There are tons of ebooks in english available now. Most of the latest ebooks are released in the following formats. PDF, EPUB, MOBI, AZW3. So that we can read them in these devices.

Ebooks in Tamil:

In Tamil, latest books are not available as ebooks. ProjectMadurai.com team is doing a great job of providing ebooks in Tamil, which are available in Public Domain. But these ebooks are very very old.

We can not get the latest content.

Currently, When any Tamil reader buys these ebook readers, he can not get any ebooks in tamil for free.

How to get latest content for Tamil?

Nowadays, there are many Tamil writers and bloggers write about various latest trends. Literature, Sports, Culture, Food, Cinema, Politics, Photography, Finance, Information Technology are the most common stuff people blog in Tamil.

We can collect these articles and create ebooks.

We can release the ebooks in the creative commons license, so that the credits to the author is maintained legelly. At the same time, any one can share the ebooks with anyone for free.

Thus, the Tamil readers can get thousands of ebooks with latest content for free.

Can we copy the content from any tamil site/blog?

No. Every blog/site has its own copyright permissions. If the author mentions, as “Anyone can copy and reuse the content”, we can copy the content.

Some authors, release their works under creative commons license. We can copy the content from these sites too.

All rights reserved”

If the site/blog contains this text “All Rights Reserved”, we should not copy the content from these site.

We have to write to the author, asking for releasing their content under creative commons license, so that the authorship is maintained even we copy and share the content.

All writers love to readch more readers. If they allow us to copy the content to release as ebooks, the readers will get good content and the writers will get more readers.

Anyhow, the readers can reach their websites and read the content. We are just changing the reading medium from browser to a ebook reader device.

This is the website, to provide thousands of ebooks for free in all the formats.

PDF for desktop, PDF for 6” devices, EPUB, AZW3, ODT are the formats we can release the ebooks.

Anyone can browse the ebooks and download for free.

Readers are permitted to share the ebooks with anyone for free.

How can you volunteers?

We need you to make this project up and running.

The task is very simple.

Copy contents from a Tamil website/blog and paste in a wordprocessor like LibreOffice/MS Office.

Send the ebooks to us.

Thats all.

There are some more tasks too.

1. Sending email to the bloggers/writers to convince them to release their content under creative commons license

2. Verify the ebooks created by volunteers for the valid content and valid license.

3. Upload the approved ebooks to the site.

Write to freetamilebooksteam@gmail.com if you are interested for volunteering.

Who is making money on this project?

No one.

This is fully volunteers driven project to make the Tamil content to reach more readers via their handheld devices. All the ebooks are free of cost and all the readers have the rights to share the ebooks.

What is the benefit for the author?

The author is not getting paid. We are not aking for new content. We just copy the same content already available in their site/blog. Some readers are already reading the content for free in their sites. We just change the medium of reading. As more people buy the tablets and ebooks readers, we create a new way to reach the readers.

Are there any Tamil sites that allow copying?

Yes. There are some sites now that allow copying.

1. www.vinavu.com

2. www.malaigal.com

3. 365paa.wordpress.com

4. balhanuman.wordpress.com

5. kaniyam.com

We should not make troubles to their plans.

Let us leave them and work on other writers.

How to read Tamil books in Kindle ebook reader?

Kindle !

It was a long dream to have a ebook reader to read the books easily.
I love paper books much. But not all the books I read are available in paper.

Mostly I read the english books I read will be around Free Open Software, Its philosophy, Documentation for programming languages like Python, Ruby etc. Reading them on laptop is fine. But was looking for ebook reader experience, as reading for hours in laptop is a painful one.

Finally, two days back, got a kindle.

Kidle supports the ebooks in mobi and awz3 format.

Most of the english books are available in that format. We can get tons of free ebooks for kindle in english.

For Tamil?

Tamil books I read involves various areas like novels, literature, short stories, philosophy etc.

Google is not helping me to find out one single Tamil book in mobi format.

Kindle 4.1.0 has native Tamil support and it shows the font little nice, if we convert some html books into mobi using the Free Open Source Ebook management software “Calibre“. calibre-ebook.com

Because, it is not showing the tamil unicode fonts well, I was much worried. The whole purpose of kindle would be gone just to read english books. I dont want this to happen.

How to read tamil in kindle then?

PDF is the only option to read the tamil book. But the A4 page sized pdf books are tough to read in knidle.
We have to change the orientation to horizontal. and have to click more to read a page.

Create PDF for kindle

We can get a lot of Free Tamil books in the site “Project Madurai”

Using the unicode HTML files, we can create Kindle sized PDF files and they are displayed in kindle as awesome.

How to create PDF for kindle?

A Page with a size of 9cm width and 12cm height is a perfect match for kindle to read.
We can use LibreOffice writer to create such pdf files.

1. Set units as centimeter

Tools->options->LibreOffice Writer->General->Measurement unit
select “centimeter” from the list.
“OK” to apply this change.

Copy the required HTML page content from Project Madurai site or any other site.

Open a text editor like gedit ot kate.
Paste the copied book content in text file to be free from any annoying formatiing issue.
Copy this text content again.

Create a new Document in LibreOffice writer.
Set width as 9cm and Height as 12 cm

Set left, right, top, bottom margins as 0.5 cm

“OK” to set this.

Paste the content copied from the text file.
Select All.
Set Font as “Lohit Tamil” and Size as 9.

Export this to pdf file.

Copy this pdf file into the kindle using the usb cable.

These are the steps to create a kindle sized PDF file.
The Tamil PDF is displayed fine now as

What Next?

We need the Tamil books in HTML format to create such Kindle sized PDF files.
Unfortunately, we can not get much books or sites except “Project Madurai” to get tamil books as unicode HTML or text format.

Let us expect the tamil book publishers release their books in mobi format or HTML format.

Reading the Tamil PDF files in Kindle is a great experience. It makes me to read more and I can not do any thing than reading a book.
I feel like going back to my school days when the days were filled with only books.

A.W.E.S.O.M.E trip to Kodaikanal

“Hei Shriniiiiiii. Can you join us to a trip to kodaikanal, this weekend? ”

What will you reply to this question, when you are loaded with tons of activities ?
I was so confused. I was never locked out with tasks like this before.

Yes. With pleasure” was my default answer before. But this time, I had to think a lot before nodding yes.Office work, some personal tasks were ready to fill the days.

Who knows? I may meet some government officers in TN secretariat to discuss about the Free laptops with Linux provided by TN govt.

Still, I was not sure when Naresh asked me the question.

“We are booking the ticket for you in Tatkal, tomorrow morning”

“Thanks. But, give me some time to think. I have more works to do”.

“Oh. You can make it dude. Come and join with us”.

“Let us see, Will try my best to make it”

The next 3 days went like a dream. Almost completed all the tasks.

Not sure on the meeting with Govt officers.
Faculty Development Program‘ on Linux is being handled Baskar and the team from ILUGC.
Office works are almost completed and my team shared some load.

“Guys. Pack your stuff. Meet you there at Egmore station, today night 9 pm”

Hanging out with friends is one of my favorite passtime.
Was at office till 7.45 pm, finishing the last minute tasks.

Sathish joined with me from office to Egmore.

Got in the train.

“Hei you. welcome”

“Hi dude. you too?”

“Atlast you came!”

“Park your seat here”

It is a gang of 15 guys from my office, but from 3 different teams.
You don’t believe it. All these guys are so calm and polite in office.
I hope they are not so when they are out of office.
Let me see how it goes. Nice guys,They did not disappointed me. 🙂

“Oh My God. No girls in this compartment”

“So what?”

”    “

”    “

Train started moving.

“I can feel the chillness of Kodaikanal, here itself”

“It is the handwashed dirty water from previous window. Move your face out of the window”
Guys went busy with making phone calls to wifes, parents and girlfriends.

“I will wake you all at 5.30 am, tomorrow”
“Wake me if you can”

“Will –e on your face to wake”

Jagan, is the hero of this trip. His cousin has a guest house in kodaikanal.
He arranged for the local travel and the stay.

Train reached Kodai Road. Everyone woke up politely.

“Look for anyone with placard with our name”
“Ravi, Kumaresan, Yaswanth, Mary, Jonsy… No one is waiting for us”

“We have to find ourself”

We found the van and the driver some 100 feet away.

“I have to goto restroom”
Got this request for the first time.
This is the most spoken sentence in this trip by the team.

The van stopped at Nilakottai, Annai Motel.
Good place to have some rest.

The next few hours went by deep sleep as the van was climbing the hill.
The chill breeze made me to fall asleep immediately.

“Get down dude. Else we will roll you out of the van”

“Did we reach the Topslip?”

“Wake up from dream. This is Kodaikanal”

“Oh. Who are you?”

I was into a Inception dream. I think this is level 1.

“Ahhhh” Cant resist the sudden kick. I came to real world.

Jagan, got the room keys. The room is so large to have 16 guys.
In few hours we got ready for the site seeing. 🙂

Had lunch at the “Hotel Welcome“.
We had our first quarrel with the server.
They messed with their seat arrangements and serving food.
Thank god. Nobody made it into a fight.

Van started to climb on the hill path.
The summer season was over, But still can see the travelers there.

Stopped at the Green Valley View/Suicide Point.
Mist and fog hid the valley.
The monkeys were waiting like they would jump on us any time.
Escaped from the ancestors.

“I want tea”
“Masala pori for me”
“Ice Cream”

“Have them guys, But don’t ask me for a rest break”
“Wait. Can you continue your speech little later? let me go for a break. Find a restroom for me”

Anvesh brought his SLR camera. Naresh has his semi SLR.
I did not take out my small NIKON camera.
Let these guys take the snaps. I will give pose.

It is a nice experience to feel the freedom.
Till yesterday, I was screwed up with a series of multiple tasks.
But now, I am standing in front of a huge hill filled with fog.
The breeze was so chill and mind was so relax.
Even a small travel can change the life into a heaven.

“We have one bat and two balls”
“Yes. All of us know that. What are you going to do with them?”
“—-. This is for cricket”
“Oh. Thats your fault. You should have told that earlier”
“Let us go to Pine forest and play cricket”

Pine forest is a neat place for a good play.
Two teams started to play.
We are the only human there.
The sound of the game is echoing around the forest.

A good camera with a model, to give pose makes a normal person as a good photographer.
As Naresh had a good camera, I gave different poses, helping him to learn the photography.
Siva joined with me to sit, stand, climb tree, jump, stare, smile to the camera.

After 6 pm, life becomes stale there.
Shops are getting shut down.
Guys are already rushing for rest.
They have to minimize the input.
Little input gives maximum outputs here.

Reached the room and the fun filled night started.
The guys begin to be themself.

Anvesh booted the TV. Anand opened his laptop.
JP still roaring his bat. Ilango filled the restroom,
making karthik, Arul, Doodala to wait outside.
Ramesh rushed to another room.

Jagan and sathyan went out to buy dinner.
I started to read the book “One night at Call center”

I heard the sound of playing cards and the cheating fellows in the game.

Dinner is from “Hotel Annakili“.
It is a small food shop. But the quality and taste is so good.
Dont miss it, if you go to Kodaikanal.

Gossips, kidding, scolding …
Guys are like girls with they are as a gang.
The non stop fun talk is started now.
Cant read the book further. Jumped in the talk and got blessed by the god of fun.

The night was a real nightmare.
The snoring sound from both sides of myself, made me stay awake for the full night.
The SONY MP3 player helped me to minimize the snore effect.
Realized why there are some diverse due to snoring. They deserve the appeal.
Rooms are filled with guys everywhere. Cant move anywhere.
Somehow, the rock songs made me to escape from these roars and made me to sleep.

“If you dont wake, I will pour this hot tea on your …”
“my …?”
“Oh. Can you bring it to my mouth, Will drink it in bed itself”
“Will add some ____, if you want me to do so”
“Noooooo. Let me wake”

Anand is good at making Tea.
Nice to have a friendly tea with unfriedly wakeup.

“What’s up guys?”
“I saw you and him,  were doing something yesterday night”
“So, the question should be, who was up?”
“Stop this nonsense talk, in the morning. We were exchanging our places, to escape from snoring roar”

After visiting the Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple,
We are in the Bryant Park now.
Bat and balls should not be kept vain.
The cricket team started shouting and playing.

The meadow is green.
The kids are running with their small foot.
I am walking with bare foot.
Can feel the foldings of grass.
The chillness spreads from foot to head.

I laid down on the grass.
The green trees around me are smiling on me.
The cloudy sky brings the romantic situation.

Started the MP3 player.
AR Rahman, Harris and Yuvan sat around me with their orchestra
playing all favorite songs for me.

When it started to drizzle, I requested them go back to their home.
The rain drops made me a kid.

I am going back to my school days, walking in the rain with friends.
The rain dance with brothers, rain stories from mom and dad.

A rolling cricket ball brought me again to the meadow.
I have to play in rain again with all my friends and family.

“Where were you lost? we were searching for you.”
“He might have gone behind any girl”
“or any couple”
“No. No. I was in this meadow only. Was listening to Music”
“Cant believe. Whatever you do, be safe. Dont get beaten by public, for any nasty stuff”

Prakash joined today and Ram left to home.
We rushed to “Kovai Annapoorna Hotel” for lunch.

Food filled the stomach and the environment filled the eyes.
It is a nice treat for all.

Guna Caves.
Little deep forest.
We started to explore the Guna caves.
It is a steep hill, where even a small slip can show you the path to heaven.

There are narrow paths, where guys with guts can go deep.
We are the guys with guts and nuts.
But, we have tons of fears, we just came down.

Photographic sessions are nice.
We made Naresh tired of shooting our faces.
He started to run behind the monkeys to capture them.
“But, I dont see any difference between monkeys and you guys”

The center lake is the most romantic place.
After having loads of stuff in mouth, we decided to go for boating.
Got two boats with 12 guys and 3 stood out.

I wanted to go for cycling. Ilango and Jagan were seeing the limitless donations of nature.

Cycle, is my feather now.
Started to fly with cycle around the lake.
I could hear the fading voices of my college friends there. We came here at our final year.

The lonely paths lead to more explorations.
The couples inside bushes hid themselves well.
The young guy and girl started to give some gap between their faces.
One guy blushed at me when I see him kissing a girl.
Romance, Romance, Romance is all around the lake.

still wondering, how some girls accept all these plays of guys in public.
Still, it is good for guys like us to enjoy.

The guys in the boat also saw some green sceneries, for their lifetime memories..

I followed some guys and girls in cycle.
They are from nearby college and looking for some private place there.
I should not follow them any more.

Rushed on some deep roads.
Some lonely places are really nice to be there.
Lost myself in the lap of nature.

“Hei. Where are you? We are done with boating. Come soon”  Got a call from Sathish.
I have to rush to lake. I am already lost in deep roads.
No one here to ask the path.
Somehow found the way to the lake.
But, again missed the path and was roaming around the lake to leave the cycle in the shop.
Got 5 calls from the team. They are waiting with the pains in their bellies.

“Oh My God. He came atlast. Driver, please fly to room. I cant resist”
“If you eat like this, you have a lift a room, like a snail.
“Shut your mouth and …”

Another wonderful evening started.
When the friends start to talk with no limits, the fun also loses the limit.
Dance, camp fire, romantic songs, fun talk, kidding … made me to forget the entire world.

Third day morning.
Still I cant believe that I am living here without seeing computer, without checking mails.
Though the gang is updating live in facebook with photos and comments, I feel better to be out of computer.

Anvesh and Karthik started early to catch and reserve train for us.
Berijam lake is todays target to make nasty.
We started early as we have to travel more.

There are 4 awesome viewpoints on the way to lake.
The mist, deep valley, distant lake, some nice girls around, made us to love the nature.

A long lonely walk around the lake is a heaven, when you go with girl or boy friend.
But, this gang made the walk as a dirty, dirty fun talk.

“Oh, My non-existing God. This should be my last trip with guys, to the heavenly places like this”
This is my prayer for past 8 years. 🙂
The god is not hearing me.
Who knows? He may be praying to someone for me.

We invited Actress Anuskha, on our DVD player in our return trip.
“En ithayam song from the film “Singham“, was played multiple times, until the DVD player stopped to work.

Purchased chocolates, Tea leaf, oils.

Its time to say “BYE” to Kodaikanal.
Packed our things and cleaned up the room.

The trees, lake, parks, rocks are simply seeing us departing.
What else they can do?
They are in hope that they can be in peace from now.

After a looooong travel, reached Dindugal and got the train.
Will goto office, with a fresh mind and energy, tomorrow..

Thanks a lot for the entire team for making this trip really AWESOME.

Thanks for my support team for freeing me from any emergency support calls.
Thanks for Sathyan and Sathish for their crystal clear accounts.

Subscribing CSM School students to Govt Library

We have  public library at our street.
It has a great contribution in our growth.

In order to make the CSM school students to use the library,
I discussed with friends and librarian to
subscribe all the CSM school students to the library.

It costs 30Rs per student as a subscription fee.

Last week, government announced an offer as 20 Rs subscription fees
until May 31, 2011

Discussed with Librarian and CSM School to get the list of students.
As the school is busy with admission, they can give the list of 6,7,8
class students as the first batch.

We got the list of 260 students.
To use the offer from the government, I decided to pay the money.

I paid 260×20 = 5200 Rs to librarian and they started the process of
joining the students.

Will get the bills in a week.

After the school opened, we can proceed with the next batch students.
I am discussing with the Dist Library Management to get these offer in
the later period also.

Thanks for all your contributions and encouragements.

Dr.Magesh is willing to donate a computer filled with ebooks to our library.
Requested the librarian to get permission from the government.

Thanks Magesh.
